About

Campbell Mesa is a network of easy-to-moderate loop trails on Forest Service land east of Flagstaff, popular enough with locals to have earned a 4.8 rating across 266 Google reviews — the kind of number that usually means well-maintained trails and a manageable crowd, not a bucket-list overlook. Named loops like the Anasazi, Sinagua, and Walnut let you dial in a short leg-stretcher or stitch a few together for a longer outing.

What to expect

Trail signage gets consistent praise for being clear and well-marked, though more than one reviewer suggests snapping a photo of the map at the trailhead before you set off, since the web of interconnected loops can get confusing. Terrain is mostly easy walking with rocky stretches in spots — worth watching your footing rather than the scenery for a few sections. Shade is generous throughout, a real plus on a hot Flagstaff afternoon, and the Sinagua loop breaks into an open field crossed by power lines at one point. Wildlife sightings come up more than once in reviews.

  • Distance: loop options from short walks up to roughly 4 miles (Walnut Trail loop), combinable for more
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Facilities: no bathrooms or water at the trailhead — come prepared
  • Parking: limited; larger RVs not recommended
  • Access: open 24 hours, watch for mountain bikers sharing the trails

Reliable cell signal (reviewers note strong Verizon 5G) makes this a low-stress pick if you want a solid Flagstaff-area hike without committing to a full-day trip.

We did the reail at 2.8 mph in 1hr 5 mins. We could have walked faster but we were doing a leisure walk. There were parents with strollers on the trail. My best advice: Look down from time to time. There are a lot of rocks you may trip over.

Rocky but not hilly, Campbell Mesa trails are a fantastic stroll through a more natural (less dense) part of our high desert forest. They also offer several popular entry points for longer treks on mountain bike!
