About

The Abineau & Bear Jaw Loop is a locals' favorite tucked into the Coconino National Forest north of Flagstaff, far from the South Rim crowds but well worth the drive if you're basing out of Flagstaff. It's carved into the north side of the San Francisco Peaks, and it's earned a 4.9-star rating from 68 reviews — an exceptional score for a trail that isn't even trying to be famous.

What to expect

The loop combines two canyons: Abineau, which climbs more steeply and rewards hikers with open views of Humphreys Peak, and Bear Jaw, a gentler, more gradual return. Reviewers consistently point to the dense aspen groves lining both drainages, making this one of the better fall-color hikes in the Flagstaff area — several note visiting specifically in late summer or October to catch the aspens turning. Expect real elevation gain and a genuinely secluded feel once you're past the trailhead, even when the parking area is full on weekends.

Good to know

  • Difficulty: steep in sections, especially the Abineau side — trekking poles help
  • Best season: late summer through fall for aspen color; use caution in heavy rain, as the trail gets slick
  • Finding it: the turnoff from Highway 180/151 is easy to miss and the parking lot isn't always where GPS points — bring directions

Some hikers extend the outing by connecting to the Waterline Trail and Inner Basin for a longer day. Managed by the Coconino National Forest — check the Forest Service site for current road and trail conditions before heading up.

Awesome loop. Difficult going up Abineau. Very steep. Worth the views.

Good trail for fall colors. Mid October typically.

Even though the parking lot will be full usually on weekends, you'll still feel seclusion on this trail, especially on the Abineau section. Great view of Humphrey's Peak from Abineau, almost making it worth going up that side, but the Bear Jaw side is definitely more gradual if you want the easiest way. Beautiful area with dense aspen groves no matter how you slice it.
